President, #RESUMEPLACE
I have written and published about 2 to 3 #FEDERALRESUME Federal career blogs per month every year since 2000. This is a collection of our MOST read blogs for 2019. The articles are usually based on client or training stories and the latest challenges for writing a Federal resume that will get a person Best Qualified. Federal job search and Federal resume writing is an ART and a CRAFT — as you can see from the thousands of Federal Resume Writing Tips I am giving in the articles. ENJOY and feel free to write to me to tell me which article you like the best. [email protected]
- Your FBI Resume Should Tell the Story of Your Competencies
http://previous.resume-place.com/2017/10/fbi-resume-competencies/
Top Tip: Your Federal resume needs to include a story about how you were Flexible and Adaptable and cover this definition:
Flexibility and Adaptability; Change is inevitable. To succeed in an unpredictable law enforcement environment, you must be able to adapt to rapidly changing circumstances and quickly respond to urgent needs. Cultivating the quality of adaptability can make you more effective and help mitigate stress.
- The USAJOBS Self-Assessment Questionnaire is a Test. Did you get 90 or above?
http://previous.resume-place.com/2012/10/the-usajobs-self-assessment-questionnaire-is-a-test-did-you-get-90-or-above/
Final words: Review the questionnaires carefully and give yourself the most credit that you can in answering the questionnaires. Also make sure that the resume matches the questionnaire and KSAs form the vacancy announcement. And maybe you will get Best Qualified and Referred to a supervisor for a federal position.
- 7 HOT TIPS FOR GETTING PROMOTED IN THE GOVERNMENT
http://previous.resume-place.com/2016/06/7-hot-tips-to-government-promotion/
Top Tip: TIMING: Don’t stay in a job for too long before trying to move up. Once you have a few years of experience under your belt, start looking for opportunities at the next grade level. Even if you don’t succeed at first, establishing your interest in upward mobility sends an important message to your management team.
- Art of Writing a KSA Your Best Accomplishment Record (AR) Stories This classic KSA blog is from 2009 and written by Ligaya Fernandez, Retired, former Sr. Policy Analyst, Merit Systems Protection Board AND first-ever HR Day Instructor for Certified Federal Job Search Trainer from 2002 until 2006. Read this one! KSAs in the Federal Resume are still popular for 2020.

Top Tip: Why are Qualifications Statements/KSAs required?
Merit competition – The government is VERY fair in reviewing applications. They ask for more information on paper, to make sure they select the best qualified candidates.
To identify “best-qualified” candidates – The KSAs are great written statements that can demonstrate your qualifications. Success in most government jobs requires significant writing, analysis, and interpersonal skills, so the KSA statements will highlight the skills that you are offering the HR specialist. Please take your time and write a few sets of KSAs to jumpstart your federal job campaign.
- Avoid These 10 Common Pitfalls in Your Resume in 2012
http://previous.resume-place.com/2012/01/avoid-these-10-common-pitfalls-in-your-resume-in-2012/
Problem # 2: Weak Presentation of Your Accomplishments
In many resumes that I have reviewed, accomplishments are often either not included or blended in the middle of a paragraph that could be up to 100 lines or more. The HR specialist or the hiring manager will not be able to determine what you have achieved for your current agency.
THE FIX: Tell a good story about your accomplishment! With the stiff competition for today’s federal positions, it’s important that the accomplishments stand out in separate paragraphs so that they are readable and engaging. Your goal is to get the interview. It’s time to let the hiring manager know that you could be a valuable asset to the new organization as a result of your past performance.
- How to Prepare a Federal Resume For a GS-14 Position
http://previous.resume-place.com/2016/05/prepare-federal-resume-gs-14/
Top Tip: Focus on your leadership skills and describe your duties and responsibilities in “executive language.”
Think in terms of the leadership competencies that Senior Executive Service (SES) candidates are expected to have: Leading Change, Leading People, Driving Results, Business Acumen, Building Coalitions
- Tough Love – USAJOBS Resume Builder Can Yield Big Results With A Federal Job
http://previous.resume-place.com/2016/01/tough-love-usajobs-builder/
Top Tip: Well, that’s what I do now when I am coaching and reviewing resumes for federal applications. I say this to my job seeking clients: “First, set up your account and copy and paste your resume into the USAJOBS Builder and fill out all the required fields. Then I can review the resume for improving the duties and responsibilities descriptions and talk about the keywords and accomplishments.”
- Attorneys with 7 years post-bar experience wanted urgently for Immigration Judges
http://previous.resume-place.com/2018/05/attorneys-wanted-urgently-for-immigration-judges/
Top Tip: The great news for lawyers interested in these important, well-paying positions: The Department of Justice’s Executive Office of Immigration Review [EIOR] is so desperate to fill these vacancies that it is not requiring otherwise qualified attorneys to have experience in immigration law (listen to the C-Span Interview, James McHenry states that past immigration experience is NOT required).
The Director James McHenry was on a C-Span interview recently talking about the hiring changes and requirements for the Immigration Judge positions.
- What is a Federal “Career Ladder” Position?
http://previous.resume-place.com/2014/11/what-is-a-federal-career-ladder-position/
Top Tip: Upward Career Mobility – A “Career Ladder” position is a federal job that allows you to MOVE UP THE LADDER. For example, you may be hired as a GS-5, but if the position has promotion potential to GS-11, then you could move up from GS-5 to GS-11 in as little as THREE YEARS!
- How a Government Shutdown Will Negatively Affect Federal Job Seekers
http://previous.resume-place.com/2011/04/how-a-government-shutdown-will-negatively-affect-federal-job-seekers/
Luckily for 2020, you do not have to read this: 2019, since 800,000 federal employees are probably now receiving their furlough notice instructions today, this will include human resources specialists and hiring managers. It’s time to think about how the shutdown will affect federal hiring and federal job search for thousands of jobseekers.
- Supervisors: Does Your Resume Feature Your Strengths?
http://previous.resume-place.com/2013/11/supervisors-does-your-resume-feature-your-strengths/
Top tip: What is your favorite part of supervision? Training, problem-solving, performance improvement, teamwork approach, skills analysis, small meetings, metrics development to analyze productivity, communications, incentives? Whatever your specialization is in supervision, this is what you should feature in your resume. You need to stand out as a unique supervisor who truly cares about developing people and operational performance.
