Top Tip: Your Federal resume needs to include a story about how you were Flexible and Adaptable and cover this definition:
Flexibility and Adaptability; Change is inevitable. To succeed in an unpredictable law enforcement environment, you must be able to adapt to rapidly changing circumstances and quickly respond to urgent needs. Cultivating the quality of adaptability can make you more effective and help mitigate stress.

Final words: Review the questionnaires carefully and give yourself the most credit that you can in answering the questionnaires. Also make sure that the resume matches the questionnaire and KSAs form the vacancy announcement. And maybe you will get Best Qualified and Referred to a supervisor for a federal position.

Top Tip: TIMING: Don’t stay in a job for too long before trying to move up. Once you have a few years of experience under your belt, start looking for opportunities at the next grade level. Top Tip: Why are Qualifications Statements/KSAs required?
Merit competition – The government is VERY fair in reviewing applications. They ask for more information on paper, to make sure they select the best qualified candidates.
To identify “best-qualified” candidates – The KSAs are great written statements that can demonstrate your qualifications. Success in most government jobs requires significant writing, analysis, and interpersonal skills, so the KSA statements will highlight the skills that you are offering the HR specialist. Please take your time and write a few sets of KSAs to jumpstart your federal job campaign.

Problem # 2: Weak Presentation of Your Accomplishments
In many resumes that I have reviewed, accomplishments are often either not included or blended in the middle of a paragraph that could be up to 100 lines or more. The HR specialist or the hiring manager will not be able to determine what you have achieved for your current agency.
THE FIX: Tell a good story about your accomplishment! With the stiff competition for today’s federal positions, it’s important that the accomplishments stand out in separate paragraphs so that they are readable and engaging. Your goal is to get the interview. It’s time to let the hiring manager know that you could be a valuable asset to the new organization as a result of your past performance.

Top Tip: The great news for lawyers interested in these important, well-paying positions: The Department of Justice’s Executive Office of Immigration Review [EIOR] is so desperate to fill these vacancies that it is not requiring otherwise qualified attorneys to have experience in immigration law (listen to the C-Span Interview, James McHenry states that past immigration experience is NOT required).
