Kathryn Troutman’s Transitioning Your Federal Resume to Private Industry is a must-have guide for anyone navigating the shift from federal employment to private industry. With a deep understanding of both worlds, Kathryn delivers a timely resource that demystifies the resume transformation process and empowers job seekers with actionable tools.

The text offers an eight-step process to help federal employees restructure their lengthy, detail-heavy federal resumes into concise, impactful resumes tailored for the private sector. Kathryn’s method is thorough and easy to follow, from locating and refining your existing resume to identifying target positions, crafting key accomplishments, and enhancing your LinkedIn profile.

One of the book’s standout features is its integration of artificial intelligence tools, such as ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot, to help readers extract essential keywords directly from job announcements. This modern touch reflects how the job market is evolving and how job seekers can stay ahead. Kathryn explains these tools and demonstrates their value with seven case studies. Each example includes the original five-page federal resume, the target job announcement, an AI keyword analysis, a newly formatted two-page private industry resume, a one-page cover letter, and an updated LinkedIn profile summary.

What works is Kathryn’s ability to balance detail with accessibility. Her step-by-step structure allows readers to move through the transformation process confidently. Readers will especially appreciate her emphasis on resume accomplishments that speak directly to private industry employers, shifting the focus from federal jargon to business value.

Top takeaway: The book highlights the importance of tailoring every part of your application to the job you seek, using the correct language, structure, and mindset.

Ideal for: Federal employees planning to exit government service, resume writers supporting transitioning clients, or career coaches working with public-to-private job seekers. Whether you are retiring, changing careers, or exploring new possibilities, this guide will help you stand out.

Concluding thoughts: Kathryn once again proves why she is the go-to expert in federal career strategy. With Transitioning Your Federal Resume to Private Industry, she has created a highly relevant, results-driven playbook that bridges the gap between government experience and private sector opportunity.

This book is a must have. As a workforce professional, I have numerous clients who are in need of assistance as they are needing to transition from federal to private industry positions. Some have not had to write a resume in years, while others have resumes that are 6+ pages long. This guide very clearly provides a step-by-step guide on the process of making the appropriate changes and/or deletions to the federal resume format.

The steps are outlined very clearly and provides just the right amount of detail about how to create the preferred 2-page resume. The book shows that Ms. Troutman is knowledgeable about the tools that are available during this time, focusing on the importance of using Microsoft Copilot and Chat GPT–two AI resources that some feel “embarrassed about using.” The author stresses the significance of these tools which provides the reader the “approval” needed, as well as confidence throughout this process.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is transitioning from a federal position to a private industry role. Though this is the intended audience for the book, anyone who is making a career change can also benefit from this valuable information. Ms. Trout’s expertise, knowledge, and relatability make this book yet another successful hit alongside a long list of incredible resources she has written over the years.

Outstanding Book! Kathryn Troutman has done the impossible in this publication! As a former federal employee, I would have never thought that a 6+ page federal resume (in my case) could be consolidated down to 2 pages – Kathryn is a “miracle worker”. Her book Transitioning Your Federal Resume to Private Industry makes it virtually impossible to miss the mark. The guide offers a very methodical step-by-step approach to develop a very effective 2-page resume for private industry from a comprehensive federal resume. The book offers priceless information on how to craft your document in such a way which makes it stand out and get the attention of Human Resources, which is critical in this very competitive job market. I fully intend to use this guide in my workshops, assisting clients who no longer have employment at the federal levels but want to move forward in the private sector. Kathry, thank you for your unconditional support and kindness through the years, as I navigated the federal employment system. And a very special thank you for your continued dedicated efforts towards our military forces and their dependents. You are the best!

Kathryn Troutman’s Transitioning Your Federal Resume to Private Industry is just what federal employees need right now. Rewriting a federal resume and getting it down to 2 pages is a daunting task – but this book will make it much less painful. I have been teaching the “10 Steps to a Federal Job” Workshop around the world at numerous military installations for many years – now I have to wrap my head around converting federal resumes into civilian resumes. Thank goodness I have a step-by-step handbook written by the Federal Resume Guru, at my disposal. Once again, thank you Kathryn for all of your hard work on this book and all of your other books.
