On October 24, Kathryn Troutman received the Moxie Award in the coveted Woman-Owned Business category for 2024. Troutman was one of only 17 category winners awarded during the event held at the Ritz-Carlton in Tysons Corner, Virginia. The Moxies have been recognizing professional boldness, innovation, courage, and savvy for enterprises, nonprofits, and associations in the Metro DC area since 2017.
In her acceptance speech, Troutman noted, “I am a serial entrepreneur, I really am. And I specialize, at the Resume Place, in helping people get Federal jobs.”
She started by working with resumes, and, over the years, added books, coaching, and training. “It all took moxie, for sure,” she acknowledged.
As she addressed the 450 business people gathered, Troutman highlighted two pivotal moves that she made in her business over the years. In 1995, she wrote the first-ever book on how to write a Federal resume when the government was phasing out the 171 form. “The Federal Resume Guidebook, in its seventh edition, is the number one resume book in America right now,” she pointed out, nearly 30 years later. Troutman went on to write many other best-selling Federal job guides too. The second key move she shared was creating a program called Ten Steps to a Federal Job®. “The US military saw this program, and they’re sending their employment specialists from all over the world to my Ten Steps training.” Troutman has turned the program into the first-ever dual credential in Federal job search training.
Over 1,300 professionals have entered their names for a Moxie Award over the past eight years. This year’s winners were selected from among 147 finalists out of a growing number of yearly entries. As part of the assessment, finalists underwent both a virtual and an in-person interview. “After careful review and evaluation by a panel of third-party judges, this year’s seventeen winners shined brightest among their competition,” said Moxie Award Chair, Katie Jordan.

“I’m thrilled to be recognized among the boldest professionals in the DC metro community,” Troutman said. “Thank you so much, Moxie Awards.”
