Start here with your reasons for your Federal career change:
- What do you like/dislike about your current job?
- What work/life balances are important to you?
- Do you want to telecommute?
- Start supervising or not supervise?
- Would you like more challenging and different assignments?
- Do you want to work in a new mission?
- Do you want your hours to be different for work/life balance?
- Do you want a new supervisor?
- Want to build a better retirement?
- Want to have a position that is more stable than your current position?
- Want to have a position that will contribute to an important public service?
Here’s a beginning list of Things To Do This Year to Get Promoted or Hired into government!
If you are currently in the government – this is your List of Things to Do to get a promotion.
- Make a decision to get promoted this year
- Make a decision to change job series this year
- Complete important training to improve your skills and qualifications
- Update your federal resume to target your next position
- Update your Linked In account to match your skills and accomplishments
- Write your Top Ten List of Accomplishments – Add the accomplishments to your resume
- Start Networking / Find a Mentor
- Attend online training that will add to your knowledge and credentials
- If you are a veteran, just know that the Veterans Preference is very helpful when you apply to the PUBLIC announcements.
- If you are a person with a disability, you can apply for positions with your Schedule A letter. You can apply for COMPETITIVE positions with the Schedule A letter, not just the Public positions.
- Submit numerous applications.
- Track and follow-up on your applications ‐ write to the HR person listed on the announcement if you want more information on your applications!
- Keep a positive attitude and keep trying.
- Get professional help if you are not getting Best Qualified.

- Write a federal-style resume
- Start or update your USAJOBS account
- Search for jobs on USAJOBS. Create a daily job search.
- Update your LinkedIn account to match the target job you are seeking
- Find a sample job that would be of interest
- Study the announcement for the QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
- Write your Top Ten List of Accomplishments ‐ Add the accomplishments to your resume
- Network ‐ talk to friends or family who work in the government ‐ do they know of any DIRECT HIRE JOBS that would match your qualifications, education, and interest?
