TOP TIPS FROM CERTIFIED FEDERAL RESUME WRITERS
TO WRITE A COMPETITIVE FEDERAL RESUME
- Start with the USAJOBS Resume Builder to write a correct, compliant federal resume.
- Search for the Specialized Experience for the job! This section may be called “Specialized Experience” or Qualifications. This is THE most important section of the announcement! Read this carefully and pick out the key competencies the job is looking for. Your resume needs to clearly (blatantly) address each of these competencies! Transform your resume by writing a full paragraph (3-5 sentences) describing what your current job entails for each of these competencies (the “KEYWORDs”). Then do the same for each of your jobs over the last 10 years! Rita Chambers, Senior Certified Federal Resume Writer, Resume Place, Inc.
- Make sure page one or two will include the Specialized Experience the announcement is requiring.
- Describe your duties and accomplishments with some detail, if you have time.
- Keep your resume to 3 to 5 pages.
- Occupational Questionnaire – Don’t underestimate yourself when filling out the questionnaire! As long as you can support your answers in the resume and ultimately, a face-to-face interview, feel confident in answering at the highest level. You may not be an expert in all of Government but you may be the go-to, subject matter expert in your organization! So answer the question in a manner that reflects your knowledge, skills, and abilities relevant to your experience and education and don’t sell yourself short! Debbie Hahn, Certified Federal Resume Writer, Resume Place, Inc.
- Be sure to upload all of the required documents into the account.
