If you are posting resumes on USA Jobs without consulting any of Kathryn Troutman’s books, you’re wrong. I have reviewed thousands of resumes for hundreds of vacancies in my 30 years of federal service. The majority of resumes I receive are horrible, and a waste of my time as a hiring official. Many applicants still use formats abandoned decades ago. I can narrow down 150 applicants to 10 interviews in less than an hour just based on resume format and content. The expectations for GS-5 through GS-15 resumes are slowly migrating to the SES requirements of a 5-page resume based on the ECQs using CCAR paragraphs. If you have been applying for government jobs without success and do not understand that last sentence, then this book will solve your problem.

Useful information that will serve as a good desk side reference if you advise others or prepare resumes. I like how the author demystifies some of the myths and unknown regarding federal employment and how the Government evaluates resumes.
Informative but lacking in a broader range of labor categories. Structure was a bit complicated to follow and seemed a bit unorganized with different formats appearing without sufficient context to provide practical application while writing or revising a complete resume.
I would expect a focus on each part of the resume with step by step instructions for each, contextual examples by labor category, and stick to one method of presenting the resume information.

I purchased this to help update my resume and it worked. One month after updating my resume I was offered a new job/position.

I hired Kathyrn Troutman from ResumePlace.com to help improve my resume and interview skills for a higher-level government position. Kathyrn recommended that I should review the federal resume guidebook as an example to help improve my resume and guidance to help promote myself in the transition to a higher-paying position. The book contained a lot of examples from job title to accomplishments to organized structure in the resume.
As a Schedule applicant in applying for the federal government position, it can be difficult but possible with the right skill sets and using its example from the book to provide a strong professional resume to present to hiring managers. In the course of 6 months, I have received 20 referred out of 35 applications that I have applied. 5 out of the referred were interviews and 2 out of the interviews were job offer. In the federal government, it takes a lot of time to process and one must be very patient to follow through.
The federal resume guidebook is an excellent book to help follow through in the hiring process and getting a successful job position in the federal government.

The book guides you through the steps to identify critical key words and integrate them into your duty/responsibility and accomplishment statements. The sample resumes are very helpful and make it straightforward to adapt the format and structure into your resume, provided you are willing to put in the time and effort to write the resume you deserve.
The book is an excellent value and will serve as a valuable reference throughout your career.

This is a great resource to have when composing a Federal Resume. As an IT Security Specialist, I found the sample IT resume for a IT specialist (INFOSEC) outstanding. It reads well and things are easy to find to see how the candidate meets all the requirements. I particularly like the capitalized key words from the job announcement and the details coming afterward. I highly recommend this book to assist with building your Federal Resume. Also the tools on the web site are very helpful.

Great tips! A Federal resume is so different from any others. I had originally borrowed this book from my library. I used it to write my resume and finally landed a government job! I truly think using this book helped me and I feel that using their format for listing significant accomplishments was the edge!
